My passion and interest in data science commenced when I was an actuarial analyst at a life insurance company where I commenced my career.
I left the life insurance company because I came across an intriguing role within an actuarial team in a cosmetics and lifestyle products company. The role was intriguing because of the company’s unique sales and distribution model which requires the application of actuarial techniques outside of the traditional actuarial space. I was particularly interested in the vast amount of unused data and the potential to apply not only actuarial techniques but to introduce data science to optimize the use of this data for the growth of the company whilst efficiently managing risk.
Being passionate about data science, I took the initiative to further research and develop an understanding of various aspects of data science using multiple channels such as Coursera and Data Camp. For example, I learned machine learning algorithms such as random forests, decision trees, support vector machines, and ensemble models for predictive modeling.
Ultimate Goal
My ultimate goal is to establish my own actuarial consultancy firm where I will provide services to different types of institutions wanting to enhance their growth and mitigate risks through the use of predictive analytics. I believe that a combination of my actuarial skills and expertise in data science and technology will enable me to provide a unique offering. In most African countries, I believe that there is still a skills gap in this area, as such, I believe I can help propel growth, whilst I on the other hand, pursue my other passion which is teaching.
Whilst there are several data-science programmes at top universities, I specifically chose to pursue my studies at Duke university, because of the value Duke places on research as well as the collaborative and innovative culture that is embodied by its vast alumni network.
